Can you say, "Run for the hills, the lawyers are after you"?

This is going to get very hairy, very expensive in a very big hurry for NVIDIA.

Keep your warranties up and your data backed up folks.

Ugh. What a mess for nVidia. Makes me happy I went with a 4870, though I feel kinda bad for the folks who are getting hit by this on their personal systems.

Here's the Wikipedia page on the various nVidia chips and what boards they're used in. Should link directly to the 8-series boards, since that's where the first failing chip (G84) is used. I'll try to build a list of the specific boards, based on this info:

G84: 8600GS, 8600GT, 8600GTS
G86: 8300GS, 8400GS
G92: 8800GS, 8800GT, 8800GTS, 9600GSO, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+ (G92b), 9800GX2
G94: 9600GT

I suspect this varies depending on whether or not it's a mobile chip, but that's a listing based on Wikipedia info. That's a LOT of boards that could be faulty because of this. :(

I plan on extending the warranty on my laptop later this year, and if the G92 in my desktop gives up I'll go buy a HD4870, ironically enough I can now get the HD4870 for cheaper than I got the 8800GTS.

I'd take this with a grain of salt. This guy at the Inquirer has been trashing nvidia with no proof at all.I frequent the Evga forums and see no increase of g92 cards failing. My 8800gt has been one of the best cards

I've ever owned.
