Power Question

I don't know diddly squat, but my daughter's computer will not power up on AC 90% of the time.  When it does, it will not stay on for long.  Battery does not work either.  Someone advised me that I may need a new battery and it affects AC as well.  Battery is the original.  Inspiron 600 about three years old.  Is that true about the battery?
