Precision M60: Bizarre resolution behaviour

Precision M60; Windows XP SP2; nVidia Quadro FX go700

I recently noticed that after detaching a second monitor (actually a TV), the resolution on the laptop seemed stuck at 1600 x 1200 (it supports 1920 x 1200). I could drag the slider in the Display properties up to 1920 x 1200 but when I hit [Apply], it resets to 1600 x 1200. I tried updating the driver (from v4.4.2.4 2003-05-27 to v6.14.10.7811 2005-08-16) from the Dell Support site but, after installation and rebooting, it now seems to be stuck on 800 x 600 (yeah, I don't know how I managed to make things worse either).

So I tried uninstalling the drivers and uninstalling the device, rebooted in Safe mode. Windows detected the hardware and I reinstalled the latest drivers.

Finally, I reboot again and the login screen appears to be at the correct resolution (1920 x 1200). I log in and the resolution remains at 1920 x 1200 for a few seconds and then it burps (black screen) and back pops the 800 x 600 nonsense.

In addition, I get a message "This message is to inform you that a video resolution lower than 1920 x 1200 was requested. Resolution changes can be requested by the user, an application (i.e. a game), or the operating system. Resolution settings lower than 1920 x 1200 could result in a "fuzzy" looking display. The LCD panel on your computer appears best at resolution setting 1920 x 1200"

So I'm at a loss to figure out *what* might be "requesting" a resolution change. The card clearly works; the screen is capable of the right resolution but it just keeps resetting to the lowest resolution. I'm open to any suggestions!

Thanks.

A.

Well, you can stop worrying about this issue (I know it's been keeping you up at night!): I found the solution in this thread:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=93710

It seems the cause was Spyware Doctor 6.0

A couple of things to note: SD 6.0 had already been disabled but was still interfering with the video card after the driver upgrade so SD 6.0 had to be uninstalled.

Secondly, I don't know what tool (if any) was used to determine that SD 6.0 was the application that "requested" the resolution change. It would be nice to have a diagnostic tool to help figure that out rather than a trial and error rebuild of the machine!

Thanks again,

A.
