Replacement Hard Drive for Studio XPS13 (M1340) ??

I have a Studio XPS13 (M1340) - which is well out of warranty but has given me 5 years great service. A recent backup using EaseUS ToDo alerted me that I now had hard drive issues - and then a Dell System Detect scan indicated 'WARNINGS' on both a SMART Threshold Test and a SMART Threshold Test 2.

My present hard drive is a 500 Gb  ST9500420ASG ATA.

Is there a compatible replacement at a reasonable price? Better still, is a compatible 1 Gb replacement available, which wouldn't be a technical nightmare to install? Where should I start searching for replacements?

Would greatly appreciate some advice - thanks!  John

Any 2.5" 9.5 or 7 mm SATA notebook drive will work just fine - so too will a solid state drive, if you want to do that upgrade instead.

Presumably you mean a 1 T drive -- either will work as long as it's 9.5 mm or slimmer (most current hard drives are, as are all solid state drives).  I would not count on cloning a failing drive - if you don't have a set of recovery media handy, and Windows still runs, you'll want to make one using the Dell Backup and Recovery utility on the drive.  Depending on what's wrong with the existing drive, you may need it if it doesn't survive long enough to clone it.

Thanks for your quick response.

Would this Studio XPS13 (M1340) be compatible with a 1 Gb hard drive upgrade (Either SSD or conventional)??

If so, after the cloning process, are there any tweaks or changes necessary to Windows 7 for a SSD?

Woops - yes, I meant 1 Tb. I had already made a disk image backup with Easeus ToDo. I understand  I may now be on borrowed time and will go for the 1 Tb SSD.  Should I anticipate having to re-configure Windows in any way after the upgrade?

I appreciate your help - thanks!
