SDHC Cards

Can I use a 4gb SDHC card in my XPS 1210 running Vista RC1?

April 14th, 2007 08:00

Well, I just got a sdhc 8GB card, and my 1210 won't even see it...

Hoping there are new ricoh drivers coming soon...

Have we had a statement from Dell on this? I'm just about to buy a 12 megapixel camera and 8 GB SDHC card but that's not much good if the M1210 won't read the card!

Hmmm. Perhaps I should have been more direct but I hoped that someone at Dell would be monitoring posts. Please Dell, can we have a statement on the compatibility of 4GB and 8GB SDHC cards with the M1210. Thank you.

This is a user to user forum not Dell tech support, we monitor but don't normally post. The card reader will read these formats.

• Secure Digital (SD) card/SDIO
• MultiMediaCard (MMC)
• Memory Stick
• Memory Stick PRO
• xD-Picture Card

Please see the articles below referring to SDHC

This still doesn't answer whether 4GB or 8GB SDHC can be used on M1210. Can we get a straight answer please?

Thank you, DELL-Jimmy P, for those links. As JohnT50 says, not quite a statement, but useful nonetheless. I have obtained a 4 GB SDHC from Sandisk and I can report that it works with my M1210 (at least, I created a few images on it from a Canon IXUS and was able to read them on the M1210). I did the low-level format on the camera so I can't be sure the laptop will also format the card but it looks promising so far. I have an 8 GB card arriving soon and I'll report how that goes.

For any SDHC Cards to work with windows XP SP2 you need to get the hotfix at microsoft.com. You send them a request and they send you an email to download and install. Now my PNY 4 GB SDHC works with my inspiron 6000.

I'm doing research to find out if I'll need an external SDHC card reader, or whether the in-built SD reader on my Inspiron 6000 (purchased in Aug 2006) would handle SDHC. First I checked the owner's manual -- it just says SD and doesn't mention SDHC. Then I checked Dell's web site -- it doesn't say. Then I checked the forums -- there is a mix of opinion. I phoned Dell Technical support and was told "no, it only supports SD". Then I re-checked the forums -- above in this thread a person says it worked after downloading a patch from Microsoft. So I phoned Dell technical support again, explained the above, and this time, after some research, they say the Inspiron 6000 in-built card reader slot supports SD and SDHC format. Sounds like the Inspiron 6000 in-built card reader will support SDHC. (You could build up the credibility of this by posting if you know it works on your Inspiron 6000).

If you need the hotfix for SDHC Card support on your Windows XP Operating system(any Inspiron system that does not already have high Capacity support) go to this Site :http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923293.Submit a request to microsoft and then they will send you an  email with the link to download and the password.

Hey-

I'm new to the forum.  Just found it because I am having this problem with a Sandisk Ultra II 4GB SD on my M1210.  I have updated the Ricoh driver and done everything else I know to do, except install the patch from Microsoft for XP (I'm awaiting the email with the link and password).

I purchased my M1210 about 8 months ago.  Can anyone suggest why my experience differs from arissone's?

Thanks in advance!

I added SDHC support to my wife's Vostro 1000 by using the latest drivers from Ricoh. See here for more information:
http://www.antifart.com/2007/12/31/dell-vostro-1000-sdhc-driver.html

I did NOT use the patch from Microsoft.

Btw, the Vostro and M1210/2010 use the same Ricoh chipset.

Once the file is unziped you will be able to use SDHC cards with your computers card reader. If you have a USB card reader not sure if it will work as I do not need one.

Good news kids!!  The SD slot in your Dell laptop can support SDHC cards with this hotfix for XP SP2: WindowsXP-KB934428-v2-x86-ENU.exe

This is not supported by Microsoft, but they say the functionality will be included in the next (and last) service pack for XP.  I just installed this hotfix and rebooted.  My Inspiron 9300 recognized my 8GB SDHC card.

I hope this helps!  Happy Computing.
