Sound and disc buttons on front of Inspiron E 1705

I just wiped the laptop to give it to my son. I have gotten everything up and running but the volume and disc buttons on the front of the laptop. I didn't put win media center but Win xp pro. I don't know if that's the problem . Do I need a certain driver or prog that makes them function ? I can't find the original disc right now so I was trying to see if I can do it without them.
