TV connected by vga to dell inspirion laptop

My inspirion laptop is connected to my tv by vga. It has been this way for at least 18months. suddenly saturday morning when computer was rebooted the tv display rotates 90 degrees but ONLY when the laptop lid is closed. If it is open the display is ok.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this??? I have looked through all the video settings and nothing has been changed and I don't see any type of option to fix it.
