Too less power on USB

Hi

I have a external USB2.0 HDD (20GB). It works fine on my 3 desktop systems, and did work fine on my old system (IBM ThinkPad 390). If I plug it in on my Inspirion 500m it only works with a external power supply. There was a adapter to get power from a PS/2 plug but I don't have one anymore on my inspirion 500m. Any solution?

Get a powered hub for the USB.

Its a known issue that the USB root hubs on the dell laptops cannot provide sufficient power to drive a high draw USB device. Either plug in the external HD, or get a powered hub.

Hey

Do you think that a USB soundcard wouldnt be able to get enough power out of a 5150? Ive been having many glitches on my Creative MP3+.

Thanks

Ben

When buying an external hard drive, better check out how much power it needs.  Usually they all work on +5DCV, but some need 1.1AMP of electrical current, specially those run on 7200rpm, some need 0.7AMP of electrical current, like Toshiba's 5400rpm hard drive, Dell sells Fuji's 4200rmp hard drive which only need 0.55AMP electrical current.  This should be able to work with Dell's notebook USB port very well.
