USB 2.0 external hard drive and ipod question

I am not that familiar with the workings of a computer so please forgive me.  My daughter has an 1100 inspiron notebook.  She wants an external hard drive and also wants an ipod. Does the external hard drive plug into the USB 2.0 port at the back of the notebook?  If so, how will she be able to use the ipod to download her songs from i tunes if it also needs to be connected via the USB 2.0 port?

If the external HD you are planning on connects to a PC via USB 2.0, then, yes, you should be able to connect the HD to the laptop via the USB 2.0 port.
If your daughter wants both the iPod and external USB HD plugged into the laptop at the same time, there must either be at least 2 USB 2.0 ports on the laptop or you must purchase an external USB 2.0 hub.

One last thing, can I use a Dell Seagate 2.5 GB, external hard drive with an Inspiron 1100 notebook computer?  I am buying my son (who has a Dimension 2400 series desktop) one of those and they are $67.00.  The only external hard drive I can find on the Dell site for the Inspiron 1100 is an Iomega 40 GB and costs $139.00.  I don't want to pay twice as much if I can use the cheaper one, plus I only need 2.5 GB not 40 GBs.
