Update Inspiron 8600 to 2G

I am trying to upgrade my Inspiron 8600 to 2G of memory.  I currently have 512M.  With the 512M in DIMMA and a 1G in DIMMB the computer powers up fine and reports 1.5G both in CMOS and Windows. It also powers up fine with the 512M in DIMMB and a 1G in DIMMA.

However when I put a 1G module in each slot the computer will not power up at all.  The power indicator comes on and the Caps Lock indicator flashes slowly 10 times and then they both go out.  The display never comes on and there are no beeps.

I have the battery and the AC adaptor connected  at all times.

Both the original 512M and the 2-1G modules are PC27oo DDR 333Mhz.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.

Try the module that won't work in one of the sockets in the other one - if it does work there, chances are you have a memory socket that's bad (the mainboard will then need to be replaced).

I have already done that.

If so, it sounds like one of the memory sockets is marginal - the mainboards for this system are under $60 to replace.
