Updating D630 BIOS from A07 to A17 version

I am trying to update my DELL D630 (Windows XP SP3)  from version A07 to A17.

I downloaded the file D630_A17.EXE from DELL site.

When I double-click on it, a DOS window appears for an instant  but it closes immediately and nothing happens.

No error code appears.

Is it possible to upgrade from A07 to A17 directly ?

Where can I find the logs generated from the .exe program ?

Should I try with a minor version of BIOS (like A12) ?

I would be VERY Careful.

If its not broken dont try to fix it.

Bios Updates should only be done with full battery and plugged into the wall with known good media.

Microsoft Windows XP - Create an MS-DOS startup disk

Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment

NOTE: You will need to provide a bootable DOS diskette. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

  1. Copy the file D630_A16.EXE to a bootable floppy.

  • Boot from the floppy to the DOS prompt.

  • Run the file by typing Y:\D630_A16.EXE (where y is the drive letter where the executable is located)

I probably found THE  problem : the file D630_A17.EXE downloaded from the DELL site via HTTP was only 6KB large.

I found the direct link via FTP and I downloaded a 1.2 MB files. I think that the way they make it available with HTTP is broken.

Tomorrow I'll try again.

Anyway I am trying to update the BIOS because the A07 version is more exposed to the known overheating problem (NVIDIA GPU) which has broken a lot of D630s of our company.
