Vertical Blue line

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with what started to be just an annoying little vertical blue line running from top to bottom just left of center of my screen. Now it has got so bad that I have to hold the screen firmly with a more than slight twist to the screen to get a picture. I have removed the keyboard to check to see if the cable is tight and it appears to be tight. Any thoughts as to my next step?

Boot the on-board diagnostics. Let them run and then go to the options to test an individual device. Test the screen. If the diags fail or the line is still present then it is likely the screen.

If not test the video adapter.

That said, it sounds to me like the screen is damaged.

PS. There are repair shops whose main business is replacing screens and/or inverters. If you don't feel confident then look for a local specialist and ask for a quote. Might be not much more expensive than buying the bare screen.

Jcook1501,

Sounds like the screen is going bad.  Apparently, the screen has been subjected to some form of stress that has broken the connection between the back of the actual display screen and its underlying back plate.  This is not uncommon for laptops.  People carry them around under their arms with books or power supplies against the top of the closed unit.  Leaving the closed laptop exposed to sun on a car seat can also cause the type of problem you describe.  The only thing I can recommend as your next step would be to look for a replacement screen.  If you decide to replace the screen, you need to disassemble the display per the service manual and get the exact model of the screen that is printed on the back panel.  Be wary of "compatible" screen replacements.  Some of those require that the LCD inverter board be replaced also.  With some screens, that can be a daunting task.

The Inspiron 1545 Service Manual instructions regarding the display assembly are here:

Hope this information helps.
