I got my XPS M1730 just over a week ago, and SP1 wasn't pre-installed.

You'll have to use Windows Update to get it.

Don't be surprised if it's not offered immediately however.

It took three or four other updates - over a couple of days, before I was eventually advised SP1 was available :smileywink:

I have M1330 with Vista.  I got a few Vista updates since getting the system 3/16 but still now SP1 update offered in Windows Update.

I had a Chat with Support and they offered the following:

Agent : Well, SP1, is out but is not pushed for customer yet.

Agent : It is an option when Microsoft will make it an automatic update.

ME : How so? From what i have been reading, SP1 could be restricted due to some drivers not yet supported like Wireless N or some other driver.

ME :  I know SP1 is available to all and I can manually download it.

Agent  : There was that issue, but the Microsoft holding it back it again.

Agent  : Some are not being installed automatically.

Agent  : Yes, you may do it manually, that is why I said they are not pushing it now. Because there are still known problems.

ME: Can you narrow down the known problems?

Agent  : The problems as I know are with audio and the security with system, sleep mode and the screen going blank etc.any other I do not know.

Agent  : Then again you many down load manually one by one, if there are problems be prepared to do a system restore.

I don't understand what slow downs I will deal with in getting Vista Premium Home?  I am coming off a Macbook Pro and moving back to Windows because I really like the m1330.  I have a new machine being produced with a Penryn 2.5 Ghz C2D with 4 GB of Ram and Geforce 128 MB video card.  Would I really notice a slow down in Vista with what I thought is a pretty fast machine?  Dell did not give me any option to get XP, or perhaps I would have, but I am really looking forward to my new laptop...  Should I be dreading my decision to go back to Windows if Vista is really that bad?  All the negativity about Vista a year ago is what original made me decide to go to the Mac OS in the first place, but I found myself constantly dual booting to Windows XP to play games.  Will I be happy with my m1330 performance for Office Productivity, DVD editing, converting video for my ipod and some gaming?

I do not agree with the others. Ive been using vista for just over a year now and WILL NOT be switching over to XP again. Ive been using Vista 64-bit since Feburary of 07. I enjoy the added security for buffer overflow of the processor (type of virus hardware protection built into CPU) as well as support for the newer sse 3.1 and 4 instruction sets. As new games have emerged using DirectX 10, xp users are stuck behind with DirectX 9. XP SP3 released soon with bring on 9.0L. With that said, you will see drivers updated for Vista more frequent then those for XP. And you can easily turn off in vista options that require more system resources, such as windows Aero, and also the new file indexing service. I for one can say, ill be sticking with Vista. As well as duel booting Mac OS X on my soon to be 1530 set to arrive late May.

Yes exactly you could not pay me to go back to XP,there is not anything wrong with vista.

The problem is users are not doing there homework and jumping into vista without checking to see if all there peripherals and software are compatible with the OS.Vista runs fine i have not had a problem with it except for trying to install SP1 because i had 2 peripheral drivers that i could not find updates for, other than that it runs smooth and stable.

i have vista on 2 computers and xp prof on the other....vista has its +,s and it minus,s    ... vista looks better for sure,,,,,but when i jump on the xp rig, its seems quicker....but i also have no problems with vista...its okay,,,,it just that there are some that are unhappy with microsoft , why they could not come out with a quicker operating system than xp,,,and microsofts sort of untruthfull adverstising. vista also had a ton of driver problems with first introduced,,, and sp1 did nothing to enhance its speed...when it comes to gaming...there is quite a bit of difference in speed...

I have 4 gigs of Ram and a 2.5 Ghz penryn chipset.  Should I also use readyboost to improve performance?  Also, the person who posted about dual booting to OSX, is that possible?  If you can do that, would it work correctly?  Are there certain drivers that won't work on the m1330?  I am pretty certain that putting OSX on a non Apple product violates their EULA, not that it would stop someone.  It would be cool to have the stability of the Mac OS, but doesn't Vista have a lot of similiar security and visual features?  Maybe Apple will do an exclusive deal with Dell to get OSX on their machines like Apple can dual boot with Windows!

With those specs, readyboost will be a minimal improvement. I wouldnt worry about it. So if XP is faster then Vista, and win 98 is faster then XP...then 98se HERE I COME   ;)
