Windows 7 installation on Replacement Hard Drive

Dell Diagnostics says I need to replace the hard drive on my Inspiron N5110.  I purchased the laptop with XP installed and with an included upgrade to Windows 7.  I have the XP installation disk but only the Upgrade Assistant DVD for Windows 7.  Do I need to install XP on the new hard drive and then upgrade to Windows 7?  Will Dell provide a Windows 7 disk (free)?  Please advise.

Hi harmonk777,

After replacing the hard drive, you will have to reinstall the OS. Since you say you have the upgrade disc for win7 - follow this link - http://bit.ly/1ljJ1DK - to install windows 7 without using the win xp disc. If you have a Dell OEM disc, it will not prompt for the product key. If not, you would have to use the product key to activate windows.

Dell will only provide the OS disc for free if the system is under warranty. If not, you would have to pay and purchase the same.
