XPS 12 Will Not Start

XPS12, Model “P20S”, with i7 processor. 2.5 years old

All was working well and the computer went dark. The only sign of life is:

-        Press and release the power switch.  The keyboard backlight (and the internal fan) turns on for about 0.5 seconds, then off. The indicator light associated with the power switch stays on. Occasionally, the keyboard backlight (and fan) will again turn on about 5 seconds later (and turn off 0.5 seconds after that)

-        Press and hold the power switch for about 6 seconds (which should turn the computer off), and the indicator light does turn off. The above process can be repeated, same results.

Nothing on the display. No beeps (I looked at the list of the Beep Codes, but the system doesn’t make it that far)

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Remove the base cover and unplug the battery (and AC adapter).  Slide and hold the power switch for 30 sec.

Try powering up again with the battery disconnected.  If it will, but won't with the battery connected, it's time for a new battery.

If it still won't power up, the mainboard (which has the CPU and RAM both soldered to it) needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the quick response.  It didn't change the behavior at all.

So this indicates a hardware fault so severe that the processor isn't even able to take its first breath and send a fault alert to the speaker?

Additional information, about half the time the fan and keyboard backlight (and the power indication light on the switch) will try a second time on its own, 3 or 4 seconds after the first time.  The second try looks the same as the first, with the fan and keyboard backlight turning on for about 0.5 seconds.  Does that indicate that the power module detected some type of system fault and decided on its own to try the power up sequence a second time?

Thanks.

It's probably impossible to say -- and the design of this model makes it a moot point, since just about any internal failure except for a bad solid state drive has the same repair - replace the mainboard.  There's nothing inside the system other than the SSD that's a separately replaceable part.
