XPS M1330 Nvidia Graphics Failed - Options?
The graphics on my laptop have failed a well-known problem
caused by defective NVidia chips.
I understand that replacing the chip is almost impossible
& the recommended solution is to replace the motherboard. I’ve gone this route
but as I couldn’t find a new board anywhere I purchased a functioning used one through
AliExpress. To avoid problems in the future I purchased a board without NVidia graphics &
also got the appropriate heat sink for this board.
I assembled everything & it worked fine confirming my
diagnosis. Then I discover that the board had a modified power socket which wouldn’t
accept the Dell PA21 adapter – this was clearly a not an original power socket
I’m now in the process of getting a refund for the board & I’m not sure I want
to try another board from this source
Apart from binning a very nice laptop does anybody have any
better ideas or sources of new or reliable used boards without Nvidia graphics?
I did see a board in the USA which had a revised version of the NVidia chip fitted
& it was claimed not to suffer the overhearing problems of the original chip.
Despite the very large number of identical failures Dell
appear to be keeping their heads down over this. I believe there was a class
action settlement for US customers by Nvidia but this didn’t reach the UK &
in any case I guess is now closed for new claims.

Some of these boards had octagonal power connectors - for those you just need to replace the power adapter.

Not necessarily - I've seen the 1330 and 1530 with both sockets. All that's needed is a different power adapter.
