Hi CHRISL1976,

What is the exact system model?

Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.

Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG

Turn off the system and press and hold fn key + power button to initiate diagnostics. If there is no display, connect an external monitor and check again. If the system beeps, the exact # of beeps in a cycle will help isolate the source of the issue.

If the system does not beep while in PSA, check if the light on the adapter is stable or flashing / goes off.

http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the service manual and try reseating the memory modules / HDD / ODD and check if the system comes back on.

If the system is under warranty, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email). If there is no warranty, If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Keep us updated.

Hi

First off thanks for the help.

I ran the lcd test on saturday and it did what was expected so i was able to move onto the diagnostics tests.

which ran for a while and everything showed up as being ok. The laptop then fired up and was fine for a day or two but its now gone back off and i cant even get the lcd test screen back up this time.

the machine has no sign of damage and unfortunatel its out of warranty

thanks again

Hi CHRISL1976,

Thank you for the update.

When you press the power button - does any of the leds come on for a second or two? When the adapter is connected to the system, does the light on the adapter stay on and stable or does it go off?

http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the service manual - try removing the memory modules / hdd / odd and graphics card (if applicable) and check if the system comes on - this will help isolate the source. If the issue remains unresolved, then I would suspect a possible motherboard failure.

You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - link provided in my previous post.
