battery life
i have recently acquired an Inspiron 1545 which performs well in all aspects but one. When fully charged my battery gives me barely an hours usage. is this normal for the inspiron?

Depends on the battery, and on what you're doing. If you've a 4-cell battery and are actively using the system - particularly the optical or hard drive, and have the display on bright - yes, you could see the battery deplete in an hour.
If the system isn't brand-new, note that battery life will decrease as the battery ages.

Depends on time in use and discharge/charge cycles. Normally get 1-3 years. If the laptop and battery are not too old, you might try a complete discharge and recharge, which might help by recalibrating the on-battery charging circuity. Before you do this, download programs such as BattStat or BatteryCare to see what the battery thinks is the maximum possible charge.
