Hi Robyks,
Welcome to the Community. Yes you can upgrade to 8 GB on this computer. The memory type for this computer is 1066 MHz DDR3. You will need 2 sticks of 2 GB. Use the below link for help on how to replace your memory.

Hope this helps.
Thank you

Hi Robyks,
6 GB should work on your computer, and does not mean that you need to have a 64bit operating system to make full use of the memory. Its always recommended that you have 2 memory sticks of the same size for optimum performance from the memory, having said that adding 6 GB will not make alot of difference and should be able to work.
Thank you

Hi Robyks,
6 GB will improve your performance from 2 GB. But to get optimum performance from your memory, its suggested that you add 2 memory sticks of the same size.
Thank you

Hi Royan,
Thanks for your RAM upgrade details. It really helps me to get an idea to upgrade my RAM sizes to 4 or 8 GB. Before that I want to confirm the default RAM sizes in the each slots. Either 1 GB in each slot or 2 GB in a single slot ?
Laptop Config: Inspiron 1564 , 2 GB RAM, i3 processor.

It is possible, but I have never tried it.
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 2
So, you will need 2 4MB sticks of ddr3-1333 non-ecc memory to max out your laptop.

Many manufacturers make good memory...Samsung, Corsair, Kingston, etc...
I would recommend checking the reviews prior to purchase. Buy the memory with the best reviews.

Thanks for the quick reply.
First, I want to know, how the DELL default 2 GB RAM came in the laptop. Either 1 GB in each slot or 2 GB in a single slot.
Please let me know.

Your best bet is to physically check, but most likely came with two modules.
