hard drive DST short test error code 0146

Please help.

Inspiron 1545 with ATI Radeon on board

Replaced motherboard. At first the system said smth like "Memory configuration was changed" - I have 2 pieces of RAM and don't remember in which slot was each of them - Consider this is not an issue as they're same things.

During test I've got "hard drive DST short test error code 0146 " - and hit continue test.

So what is that and how to fix ??? Hope no need to take the battery out (as some forums suggest for desktops).

Unplug and remove the main battery (it is not necessary to remove the reserve battery).  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Restart and re-test.  If the same error comes up a second time, the hard drive has failed.  Replace the drive.

Hey. Thanks for your advice - will try,

BUT

I stopped test just to turn off computer and My windows 7 booted as usual - I have access to files and other things. Is that a good sign or doesn't mean anything yet ???

Its a good sign but I would advise purchasing an external hard drive and backing up all your data to it just in case.

Error code: 2000-0146 (DST Log contains previous errors) refers to previous errors
in the psa logs which might not really be a hardware failure.

error code: 0146

Msg: Error code: 2000-0146

Msg: Hard drive 1: Self test log contains previous errors.

Please refer to the following article for more information on running
the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics Utility: http://dell.to/MNJv4B
2000-0146 (Drive Self Test) can also occur if you have not provided a writeable Disc to check the optical drive.

Run the LONG Test on Just the hard drive.

It means the log has Previous Errors.

Hard Drive

Remove and reinstall the Hard Drive for the error codes:

Please see the Service manual for instructions on how to remove and replace the Hard Drive. Be sure to remove and reinstall the cables for the hard drive if you are on a Desktop Computer.

After reinstalling the hard drive re-run the diagnostics if you receive the same error code

RE Run the Drive Self Test (DST) from the Utility Partition also

known as the 32 bit diagnostics to determine if the previous error has been corrected.

If the DST from the Utility Partition does not indicate a failure of the drive,

we consider the error to have been corrected and the drive does not need to be replaced.
