i8000/SXGA+ Radeon 7500 Upgrade Phase 1 SUCCESS!

I just wanted to report some very encouraging results that I've seen so far while upgrading my i8000. Here are the relevant specs:

* Inspiron 8000
* BIOS version A19
* SXGA+ (1400x1050) display; panel is an IBM part
- Information reported from XFree86:
(II) RADEON(0): Panel ID string: IBM IBM-ITSX95
(II) RADEON(0): Manufacturer: IBM Model: 2193 Serial#: 16843009
(II) RADEON(0): Monitor name: IBM-ITSX95
* ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (Dell part #9J057)

Procedure: I first upgraded the BIOS from A18 to A19 (just to be safe). I then replaced the Mobility M4 with the 7500. Upon powering up, it just worked. XFree86 is currently driving my panel at its native 1400x1050 resolution, without changing so much as a line of my XF86Config file!

I'm not ready to declare complete success yet, because I haven't even tried to boot into Windows yet, much less try any 3D games. I will still need to install W2K drivers for the 7500, and I suppose there's a slight chance that Windows won't drive the panel at 1400x1050 for some odd reason--although typically if XFree86 can do something, Windows will do it too.

This should be encouraging news to many, since the conventional wisdom has been that the 7500 would not work with the SXGA+ display. From what I can see right now, it looks like the conventional wisdom may be due for a little revision!

I'll post more info as I find it out, including whether the M4 will fit into/work with the i4000...

Cheers,
Jeremy

Whoops, I knew I'd forget some detail or another. I'm using the 15-inch SXGA+ display. But when the UXGA display arrives, I'll REALLY be in business. :-)

Now to finish tackling the Win2K driver installation... more details later!

We'll be waiting!! Congrats on your success - is it a 14.1 or 15 inch SXGA+?

Interesting.
I wonder if there has been a BIOS update?
Do you know what brand LCD it is?

thanks, I missed that.
time to do some research on IBM 15 SXGA+

its a driver issue... ;)

I dunno what IBM is hiding, I got a big fat Japanese 404 error.
it just irks me to no end when companies try to hide information about products we purchase.

btw, thanks for looking that up.
I finally gave up, couldn't find anything helpful.

This is what I was able to find out on the panels Electircal interface:

>>Electrical Interface 8 pairs LVDS?iEven/Odd R/G/B Data?i6bit?j,
3sync signals, Clock<<

The information for the ITSX93 specifies Dual in electrical interface so I suspect since the ITSX95 does not that it is single LVDS. Here is the url for the information: http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/oemj/lcd/products.html. Please note that IBM has removed this from the US sites so they may alsotake it down from here.

This leaves us back to the question of why was that first person who tried it on the SXGA+ on this forum unable to get the LCD to work on the 8100? I'm begining to think it would have worked if he had flashed it with the ATI bios update before he gave up. (BTW-if anyone says it is a driver issue I'll scream!)

To recap, I'm using the 15" IBM SXGA+ panel (the original message indicated the part number, etc. as reported by the video BIOS, but not the screen size). Someone asked the question of how to determine the panel type from Windows--I don't know how to do this, but I guess any app that inspects the video BIOS should tell you. XFree86 under Linux shows all this information in its log files, so that's how I know. By the way, assuming that Phase 2 goes ok (which consists up upgrading the SXGA+ panel to a UXGA panel) then I will be offering this panel for sale. :-) If no one here is interested, it will most likely be going to eBay.

The most difficult part of this entire process, by far, was getting Win2K drivers to work. I finally was able to use the Omega drivers (from www.omegacorner.com). What I found to be a little odd is that I had to "point" Windows at the proper directory (with the INF file) and let it choose the correct driver. This in itself isn't odd I guess, but when I tried to pick the device manually from the INF file, no device types showed up. Because I'm a control freak or something, I kept trying to do this (unsuccessfully, I might add) until i finally gave up and let Windows pick the driver from that directory. Sure enough, it chose Mobility M7, and it worked the first time. So if anyone else is planning to do this upgrade, and likes to do everything manually like I do, be warned. :-)

Anyway, things still appear to be working great. I ran the DirectX tests and a few 3D games but haven't really done any benchmarking (I don't have any benchmark data from the old setup anyway).

Oh, and I also have an "extra" Mobility M4 with 32MB if anybody's interested. :-)

Cheers,
Jeremy

Go and register at the Dell Premier Support site and it will have a link to the parts put in your notebook (using your Service tag number).

I had suggested his doing the ATI vbios upgrade, but he ignored it and bailed. It would have been interesting if he tried.
