laptop computer freezes during game. Have to unplug AC and battery to stop drive/noise.

I have a failry new Inspiron 1525 running W7.  I've had no problems for about 1 year, but lately, while playing CD games the computer will freeze up and make a sound like the CD (or hard) drive is running wild.  I then have to remove the AC plug and pull the battery out.  I let the machine cool for about 5 minutes then re-insert the battery (or leave it out and power-up with only AC=easier "fix" when this happens again).  Any ideas?

Does the game require the CD be inserted in order to run?  What game?  Is it overheating?  What does the event log say?

Yes on the CD requirement (this happens with several games all of which require CD use).  I don't think my computer is overheating (I have it raise at a slant with some air underneath.  Not sure about the event log; I'll try to have a look after rebooting from the next incident and post anything suspicious here.  Thanks for your interest.
