latitude 100L - DEAD DISPLAY...can i remove and still boot up computer (using external monitor)

recently my dinosaur's display died on me. i have it hooked up to a desktop monitor, and it works great. if i remove the display from the laptop completely (as i no longer need it) will the computer still boot up (leaving it connected to the monitor) or does the laptop need to recognize the display to boot up properly
