latitude d610 video issues

I recently acquired a Latitude D610.  It has the Intel video chipset in it.  I want it to display at a resolution greater than 1024x768, but it won't.

I have downloaded and installed the drivers from the Dell website.  Even after doing so, I still see nothing in my Device Manager that might be a proper video driver.  The monitor driver is simply the generic Plug and Play, and I can't seem to find precisely what type of display this is so that I can download a more specific driver.

I have seen on the net that different people have gotten their D610s to run at higher resolutions, but I can't seem to find HOW they did that.

Oh, and I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 on this.  1gig ram, etc.  Secondary display can be jacked up quite a b it, but not the primary on the laptop.

Anyone have an idea for me?

thanks!

To get higher resolution, you would need to replace the screen.  What you have is an XGA screen, which is not capable of resolutions above 1024X768.

Unless you hook up an external monitor thats all you will get from the onboard screen unless its UXGA or higher.

XGA = Max 1024 x 768

SXGA will give higher resolutions as well and was available on this model -- this one was never offered with UXGA.

okay -- so how do you know I have an XGA screen? Because of the chipset?

And are all Latitude d610 computers limited in this respect?  I noticed that there are two alternate chipsets available for this machine; the ATI Radeon Mobility 200 & 300.  Would I be able to get better resolution with those?

Almost all Latitude D6xx models shipped with XGA screens - the only other option was a 1280X1024 SXGA panel, and it was extra cost.  Very few buyers opted for it.  If you can't set the resolution above 1024X768, you have an XGA screen.

The video chip is not the issue - you can change the mainboard to the one with an ATI X300 chip, but it'll still be limited to 1024X768.  It's the display panel you need to change.

This is the panel:

if  you decide to buy one, BE SURE YOU GET IT with an inverter and cable - the ones you have may not (likely will not) fit the different screen.

okay, thanks for the infornation.  So the monitor drivers being generic isn't an issue?  I thought it would have been.

When looking at laptops in the future -- I plan on exchanging this one as it does not suit my needs -- how can I tell what sort of display it has?  I could go and try to change the resolution, but there may be an issue with the drivers not being installed, and I won't be able to install drivers on a display.

The specification sheet (which you can access using the service tag) will list the display type.

Remember, the higher the resolution, the smaller the pixels - so fonts will be smaller.

yeah there is that ...I figured the spec sheet would tell me -- I was hoping for a way to look for it in Windows, like in Display Properties or Device Manager or something.

On most Dell and other systems, go into the BIOS setup.  The type of display will be listed.

the BIOS -- thanks.  I don't know why I never think of that :)
