"frying', or 'sizzling' sound at start-up
My inspiron 1520 makes a frying, or sizzling sound after I turn it on , as I am signing on. I have been hearing thi sound for about 3 months. I haven't looked at the schematic lately, but the sound seems to be coming from the 'backspace' area when the hard-drive light is blinking? I hope the sound isn't the hard-drive, but if it is - what's a fellow to do?

Start with an extended - not just quick -- diagnostic, including a full test of the hard drive. F12 at powerup, Dell diagnostics.

Thanks for the information. I did run the test as you suggested. All came up as 'passed'. I did notice the sound again as the 'D' (C.D.) drive was being tested. After hearing this noise for 3 months, or so, it has seemed to quited down a bit. I have a 'D' drive cleaner disk. Do you know if they are safe to use?
I do appreicate your assistance. I didn't know about the self diagnostic test, or er, forgot about it, so thanks again.
