system startup problem

my friends inspiron 1545 won't boot to windows, saying there is no bootable devices. After diagnostic test it says there is no hard drive at all. I believe he smacked the laptop near the mouse pad. why can't i reformat  and reinstall windows on an external hard drive

If he "smacked" the laptop and there's no bootable device my guess is that the hdd is broken or slightly fallen out of place. Start by entering BIOS to se if the HDD is displayed at all. If it isn't; reseat the drive and try again.

Hold F12 when powering up and run the diagnostics and any extended tests
