upgrade memory on Inspiron 7720

Hi,

I have an Inspiron 17R (7720) bought in 2012 with 6GB memory (4+2) DDR3 800 MHz PC3-12800 and I would like to know if I can upgrade my memory with PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz 204pin SO-DIMM DDR3 as Y see the RAM frequencies are now much higher.

Thanks for your help !

It won't make any difference in speed - the faster RAM will simply downclock to its current speed.  The speed is limited by the mainboard and processor -- not the memory itself.

Even DDR3-1600 isn't very future-proof -- by the end of the year, a new Intel mobile platform (Skylake) will be out and it'll require DDR4 memory, so the heyday of DDR3 will soon pass.

Thanks for the answer !

I understand that this model was successfully upgraded to 16 GB by some people even if Dell officially states maximum RAM size as 8 GB

If I want to upgrade to 8 GB, shall I just change the 2 GB memeory to 4 or is it required that I change both to avoid problems ?
