Dumb question? To use an external monitor on my Inspiron, what port do I plug into on the laptop?

It depends on the system model -- specifically which type of port(s) it has -- and on the monitor, and the same.
No one can answer without knowing those two things.

It would need to be into the HDMI port. What connections does you monitor have? If you don't have a HDMI port on your monitor you'll need an adapter. I.e. HDMI to display port/VGA. They are cheap ~$5.
