Did you install the Dell notebook system software and chipset drivers first?

I had a slow problem yesterday. Took me 18 hours to install XP. I didn't want to quit in the middle, so I kept at it.

When it finally finished, I went into SETUP (F1 during BOOT UP) and found the CPU option was set to COMPATIBILITY MODE!! I don't kow why, but that was my problem! My fan had gotten blocked and the CPU got hot. I don't know if the CPU automatically goes into compatibility mode when too hot, but somehow it got into compatibility mode!
