XPS13 (9350) external monitor cable

I just took delivery of a 9350, to replace my problematic 9343 and it has a different external monitor connector: Thunderbolt-3? USB-C?

Does anyone know if a regular USB Type-C to HDMI cable will work?

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

Yeah you can use a regular USB Type-C to HDMI cable. Click the link for the cable on the Dell website

However, note that it says "The Dell USB-C to HDMI Adapter supports resolution of up to 1080p". Consequently, 1920x1080 would be your highest resolution.

I'm currently looking to connect my brand new XPS 13 (9350) to an external 4K monitor, but it seems to be impossible.  I've spent hours (many painful hours) on the phone to Dell, and got nowhere.  They're releasing a Thunderbolt 3 dock in "Early 2016" but don't seem to have anything available now.

Can't quite believe that they will happily accept an order for this laptop and a 4K monitor, despite knowing it's impossible to connect the two together.

Ordered this from Amazon. I'll let you know how it goes!

Seems to work OK with my Acer 2560x1440 display.

Spoke too soon :emotion-6: Mostly when switching on, it doesn't recognise the second monitor.

Unplugging the display cable and reconnecting says "USB failed" (or something like that).

Some seemingly random combination of disconnect/reconnect and power off/on eventually brings the second monitor back to life.

I bought a type-c to HDMI adapter.  The second monitor detects no source while the laptop makes the positive USB toggle sound.  Updated firmware and there's no change.

I have found that, if I unplug the Type-C monitor cable from the laptop, then power-up, then plug it back in, after a while the laptop switches to the two monitor configuration.

It's a bit of a pain but it does seem to work reliably.

Extra bit re my above post.
I've just noticed, I now have a new option for the external monitor resolution.
Under screen resolution, I can theoretically now select (I recently did a re-boot) 2560x1080 (which is down as Recommended). BUT if I do this, the external monitor goes blank and into screen saver mode and I only see items on the laptop screen.

I recently ordered and received a new DELL XPS 13 9350.
After a prolonged period of research I have updated the drivers to the current drivers (why was it not supplied with the current / latest drivers?) and I can at last get an external monitor working.
HOWEVER:

1. I can't get the external monitor resolution above 1920x1080. It seems that this is the maximum resolution possible for an external monitor?
- en.community.dell.com/.../19660294
- en.community.dell.com/.../19502523

2. The clarity of the display on the external monitor is terrible.
I have tried connecting via the USB Type C (aka Thunderbold)to an adaptor and then both an HDMI to HDMI and a HDMI to DVI-D cable. I've also tried via USB 3.0 to an adaptor and then both VGA and DVI-D connections.

The monitor is a DELL U2913WM.
On my previous DELL XPS 15 L521x, the external monitor, worked great at 2560 X 1080 (using a cable from the laptop Minidisplay port).

a) Is it correct that I can't run an external monitor at a resolution of more than 1920x1080 on this new XPS 13 9350 ?
- if a higher resolution can be received, how ?

b) By what method can the quality of the image, be improved on the external display. Perhaps a specific adaptors and cable combination? Perhaps something in the settings (it's currently 100% for the size of text, apps and other items).

If it is not possible to get this XPS 13 9350 to run an external monitor at a higher resolution (eg 2560 X 1080 as I had before on my XPS 15), and it not to be as crisp as it is on the laptops own monitor or as it was on the external monitor when used with my previous XPS 15, then I will be returning the XPS 13. If that is the case, what Dell laptops can run an external monitor at 2560 X 1080 (or similar).

Short version, the integrated graphics card of DELL XPS 13 9350 can't support more than 1920x1080.
This is the maximum resolution of the integrated Intel HD Graphics 520.

I've tried multiple cable and adaptor options as well as a chunk of time doing updates to drivers etc via DELL tech support.

So I'm sending the DELL XPS 13 back and getting a DELL XPS 15 that has a discrete NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960M with 2GB GDDR5. This can apparently run an external monitor at up to 3840x2160.
It also comes with an HDMI port, so no fiddles trying to go via an adaptor from the Thunderbold 3 (AKA USB-C) port. Although if that does work on the new XPS 15, that'll be great.

I quite like the XPS13 but it's connectivity ***. I work with an external monitor and have had problems all along the way. I recently purchased the Cable Matters USB-C to HDMI / VGA / Ethernet / USB Multiport Adapter (Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible) because I needed HDMI plus Ethernet but I can't get the HDMI to even be recognised by the XPS13.

However, it simply won't recognise my Cable-Matters combined USB-c, HDMI/Ethernet/VGA/USB3 adapter

Just FYI, my external monitor, with XPS13/9350, is running at 2560 x 1440.

Great that you got yours to work at that resolution.
What cable +/or adaptors did you use?
 - I'm sending back my XPS 13 and getting an XPS 15 that has a non integrated graphics card that will apparently support an external monitor at up to 3840x2160

I have an Acer 2560x1440 display and it works fine with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B012ECASZ8

However, you have to wait five minutes or so, after powering up the XPS13, before plugging the USB in. Otherwise it says USB failed. Which is very odd!
