error message

Hi,

I own a Dell studio with srs premium sound, i3, windows 7. I was runnind hard ware diagnostics, got this error code 2000 - 0146 during the hard drive test.

This started when dell support software could not perform a pc check up instead referred me to running a diagnostic.

What does itt mean, is the hard drive bad ?. my pc still functions well.

Thanks, need your help??????

The drive is on borrowed time, so be sure you keep backups.  If the system is under warranty, report the error to Dell - they'll replace the drive.  If not, you will need any standard, 2.5" 9.5 mm or slimmer SATA notebook drive to replace the faulty one.

Its not to prove someone wrong but I completely agree to ejn63 at the same time but we had instances, after doing a PC restore the error was never shown back.

The Dell diagnostics are OS-independent.  The error indicates hardware - not software - is at fault.

Hi itansuq :

2000:0146 need not necessarily be a hard drive problem. It can also be due to OS corrupted files.

Had it been 2000:0142 which then indicates a HDD being bad.

Try running the 32 bit diagnostics and if get any error in the form of 0f00:xxxx then call the technical support if the computer is under warranty then they would do the needful.

In fact a PC restore is what I would suggest instead of getting a HDD replaced.

You can find on how to run the diags here  http://dell.to/HJYdTG
