Here are a few ways to reporpose an old system.
-Turn it into a server; web, proxy, firewall, file server
-Learn a new OS by installing Linux
-Make it a retro game station
If you have a tablet or old phone you could:
-Create a weather station
-Make it a counter-top calendar
-Use it as a universal remote
-Dedicated music player

I wish it is easier to re-purpose an old tablet as it is to re-purpose a used laptop.
