Dell Latitude 9420: Annoying audio issues (cracks and pops)!

Hello,

since the beginning of using Lat. 9420 (before about 4 months) I have some anoying audio issues. Mostly cracks and pops when playing audio. I use LatencyMon and it detects a very high latency. Typicall Acpi.sys.

  • I don't use Dell Optimizer.
  • I only use Maxx-Audio App and Dell PowerManager.
  • I use Windows 11 Prof.
  • I always have latest BIOS installed.

After some playings with drivers, I find out, that the audio issue get more or less, depending which drivers you use (not only audio, rather the complete system). Manufacturer's or Dell's. So I installed all drivers from Dells support page for 9420. After that, the issues are not gone, but bearable.

Before some days I installed new BIOS v1.14 and new Video drivers 31.0.101.3222, A10. After that, the audio issues pretty much raised up.

I went back to video drivers 30.0.101.1692, A09 and the issues get more less, but are not gone. The latency was also high, but not as high, as with 31.0.101.3222, A10. But also not as low, as with video drivers 30.0.101.1692 and BIOS v1.13.

So I assume, that BIOS v1.14 causes very high latency. But I don't switched back to v1.13, because of the fixed problems of v1.14.

It's extremely embarrassing that Dell can't manage to provide decent drivers for a 2000 dolar laptop that runs without problems. This is better with any Acer laptop for a fraction of the purchase price.

Well I hope that finally Dell will do something, because I had solved similar problems before disabling all dell services and adobe ones, but thanks to blessed microsoft and their - you have no choice updates, again I am stuck and no solution. Pops and annoying cracks.

I am joining you in you pain. Here also everything updated. I have problems with Presonus ioSTATION24c, previously I had problems with Seinberg UR22C - both USB-C audio fast interfaces with low latency. Someone is tying to push the responsibility to the others so badly.

Dell?

Why disabling your services helped before? Why they need to be active? Only one 1 week update check - means It will have scheduled run to check the update and let me choose (not every hour/ minutes).

A very high latency is the issue. But I assume DELL support didn't know the term "latency" and it's consequences.

In my case, the video driver is the reason - maybe combined with faulty BIOS (1.14.0). The latency is okay (not good), if I have installed August 11, 2022 Intel UHD/Iris XE Graphics driver 30.0.101.1692 A09 . If I have installed any other, newer driver version, the latency raise up dramatically and there are cracks and pops on audio playback.

I have tried the also recommended September 12, 2022 Intel UHD/Iris XE Graphics driver 31.0.101.3222 A10 from DELL and some from Intel. Like the current ones 31.0.101.3413 WQHL,  31.0.101.3430 WQHL and 31.0.101.3616 WHQL, Without any success, always high latency and cracks/pops.

I have no DELL and Adobe services installed.

Thank you for your response!

Oh believe me Dell perfectly know what "latency" is. I am musician owning Dell Precision model. And all pops and cracks, are one reason of that.

Kindly install one of latency monitors and check. Fro example Latency monitor: https://resplendence.com/latencymon.

Check your results. For me there will appear ACPI.sys as the mian reason. After disabling their (Dell) services and processes, as well as adobe ones, with previous update of WIN, Dell, and Presonus it worked.

Fro me personally seems like never ending story with automatic updates I hate. Ant more funny is that hardware provider can not force installing thither drivers. Or maybe there are not updated.. Or maybe also curious case of Dell, maybe not important services.. and their choose of drivers.  Why? Can someone explain me?

If I bought premium laptop and premium music card? Pops, cracks and latency is a nightmare.

Best regards,

I already use latency monitor - otherwise I can't get sure of the latency.

As I already wrote, I don't have any DELL or ADOBE software/services installed. For me the video driver is the issue.

Just here to say I'm experiencing the same issue.  Have all updated drivers as per the Dell Support site.  It's horrible that a laptop of this price point has an issue as large as this.

So I assume, that you have installed current video driver 31.0.101.3222?

If yes, you can try to replace it with older one: 30.0.101.1692. For me the latency/cracks decrease.

Good Luck.

Please don't expect any qualified support from Dell, they are completely clueless and give you such hints as reinstall Windows.

So the only choice for this issue is, to use current video driver and having massive sound issues or using expired video driver with less sound issues.

I have learned my lesson from this and will no longer buy a Dell device.

Which option of NVMe-Controller have you selected in BIOS?

AHCI or Raid?

We had same issue and fixed it by disabling idle power functions:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0003\PowerSettings

ConservationIdleTime -> ff ff ff ff
IdlePowerState -> 00 00 00 00
PerformanceIdleTime -> ff ff ff ff

"0003" may vary! You need to pick the one whos key "DriverDesc" called "Realtek Audio".

Just letting everyone know that the most recent round of updates seems to have fixed the issue.  I just installed Realtek version A36 and Iris version A12 via the Dell Support Assist tool.
