Dell Latitude D430 and 1.8" Toshiba 240Gb MK2431GAH
Hello. I've ordered HDD 1.8" Toshiba 240Gb MK2431GAH but it doesn't work (laptop doesn't see it). These sellers:
https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=13552
mentioned that it is for D430 and it must work.
Is it really compatible or just hdd is defective?

All right. I get new original ribbon cable and both HDDs are working.
So, Toshiba 240Gb MK2431GAH is supported by Dell Latitude D430.

Did you replace a drive, or are you installing this as a new one? If new, it requires a connector in order for it to attach to the system board.

Thanks for reply!
There's only one place for HDD in Dell Latitude D430. I've removed the old 60Gb HDD and installed Toshiba 240Gb. But it's not recognizable in BIOS:
Primary Hard Drive: {none}
There's another issue, connection jumpers are length different. I make photo - the new HDD is on the old (new is on the right, and old is on the left with inserted ribbon cable):
At the same time, there's equal insertion socket (for ribbon cable) dimension and 40 pins each.

Do the drive connectors match on both drives? Many of these were designed for use in older-design iPods and used a different connector from the one needed to attach the drive to a PC notebook.
There were a few different LIF and ZIF connectors used on 1.8" drives (which never really became popular in the notebook world -- hence the relative rarity of the drive form factor).

The ribbon connector is 0.2-0.3 mm smaller (by width) than connection socket in new HDD. But both are ZIF.
What kind of ribbon cable I need? I was thinking there's one ZIF kind...

There is more than one ZIF socket on these drives - but if the drive doesn't fit the cable, it's the drive you need to change -- you cannot change the cable that connects to the mainboard. That is proprietary and only the original one will work.

All right, one more question. Have D430 any BIOS restrictions? I mean, the maximum capacity support for primary PATA HDD. For example, BIOS (last revision) specifically can't see more than ... Gigabytes, may it be?

I doubt it, given that a similar BIOS is used on the D530/630/etc. that don't have any restrictions (and do use SATA rather than PATA drives).

I've found the similar topic, where at least two users noticed that Toshiba 240Gb MK2431 has worked in their D430.
https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-General/Setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives-installed-F3-error-while/m-p/3546829/highlight/true#M555701 and other replys.
But that topic is closed and I don't know how to contact them...
