Latitude 5520 missing hard drive

We have about 140 Dell Latitude 5520's in our inventory.  I have had a few laptops start up with a loud system speaker tone and state that no hard drive exists.  I was able to either open up the case and disconnect the battery and/or the hard drive.  Was able to reboot again with no further issue.  

BUT

my problem is that Dell seems to have had this issue since atleast 2013.  I found multiple posts that this has been happening for over 10 years.  Does Dell not have anything they can run to check for this incompatibility?  In my case, these laptops are new right out of the box that this has happened to and a scan on the drive shows no errors(SSD)

Anyone have any ideas why this is really happening and any other fixes besides cracking the case open?
