Putting 2Tb SSD in Latitude 7400: documentation vs common sense?
Hi,
I am looking to buy a Latitude 7400, but want to upgrade the M.2 2280 to a 2TB Samsung Evo drive.
On this forum when people have asked about maximum SSDs on other laptops the response has usually been "that's fine, no real limit, other than 2tb max per partition". However there is an 7400 Owners Manual that says:
"Solid-state drive M.2 2280 PCIe / SATA Up to 1 TB"

So I called Sales (who said they didn't know), then technical support who said that there was a 1TB limit because "it says the same in the 'service field manual'". But they weren't able to say why there would be such a limit.
It could be a case of support robot-staff reading a piece of text that doesn't seem to make sense, with nothing else to go on. But could they be right? If so, what would cause such a limit?

The Dell limitation is for the reason that the maximum SSD tested on the unit is 1 TB. So Dell support will of course echo that figure. Interestingly Crucial also shows a 1 TB M.2 SSD as the maximum compatible drive they sell. However Kingston sells a 2 TB M.2 SSD (KC 2000 series) that they list as compatible. And offer a 100% money back guarantee to back up that statement.

Thanks that's helpful. It makes absolute sense that they would only allow for what they have tested. On the other hand it seems a poor choice to only test with a 1TB SSD. I'm sure if the test team asked the parts team nicely, parts would just give them a 2TB SSD...

The other limit has to do with the thickness of the drive however.
Depends on WHICH 7400 we are talking about.
The M2 slot is not 80mm in the 2 in one 7400 2 in one not sure if its 42mm or 60mm but thats a limiting factor for M2.
On the full size 7400 7mm drives are fine but 9mm and 15mm are not. 2.5 ssd limit is how much money do you have in your wallet.

The 2 in one model only has short M2 slot and will not take a 2.5 drive.

Lots of people searching nowadays to buy electronic components store but very few can find a good one. There are a lot of places to buy electronic components, but I prefer to buy components online.I'm saying this as I recently bought a few electronics from buykingston and it's going very well.
