what is the M.2 slots interface speed ?

I am looking at a Dell Latitude 5175, I confirmed by someone here that it supports PCIe NVMe SSDs...However I dont know the number of lanes supported...

does the M.2 slot support x2 or x4 PCIe NVMe SSDs?

Only the newer XPS models and Alienwares will run in GT4 mode.  Even in GT2, an NVMe drive will outrun a SATA drive.

It's a decision the mainboard manufacturer makes - not the chipset.  For desktops, running in GT4 is pretty much standard - power consumption and heat generation are non-issues.

For notebooks, power consumption and heat are major issues - one reason that the slimmer the system, the more likely the drive will run in GT2 mode - to reduce heat and extend battery runtime.

ModularDesign,

The M.2 supports x4 PCIe NVMe SSDs.

But most likely in GT2 mode only - - so take the maximum speed quoted by the drive maker and divide it by 2.

How to know if it operates in GT2 mode ?

How about SATA3 SSD's ? will they run in half speeds too ?

So this limitation only applies to Skylake U&Y series, right ? My desktop and my gaming laptop support DMI 3.0 , which means they support full NVMe ssd speeds...right ?
