When I install the .deb with

sudo dpkg -i synaptic-i2c-hid-3.13.0-32-backport-dkms_1.6.3_all.deb

it can never passed whatever solution I tried from various forums.

Loading new synaptic-i2c-hid-3.13.0-32-backport-1.6.3 DKMS files...

First Installation: checking all kernels...
Building only for 4.4.0-21-generic
Building for architecture x86_64
Building initial module for 4.4.0-21-generic
Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which
does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built.
Skipped.

It appears that you are trying to install this on kernel 4.4.0-21-generic.  IIRC this was a 3.13 back port for a driver that was part of the 3.19 kernel (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS backport from 15.10).

Someone else can confirm, but I don't think you should need it.

Hi,

Just got my Dell XPS dev ed, 9360. For some reason the installation of Ubuntu 16.04 crashed and Dell Support suggested me to install 16.10 instead so I did. Most things seem to work but I have the trackpad freezing issue. Does the fix/drivers work for 16.10 as well?

And in general. Is there any drivers/BIOS I need to get and if so are they compatible with Ubuntu 16.10?

Thanks!

I believe BIOS update resolved that problem for me. You can check your current version by going into the BIOS setup (pressing F2 a few times as it boots).

Latest BIOS is A09 (click link).

For instructions on how to install in Ubuntu, click here.

Personally, I updated the BIOS a different way. If you boot from an EFI partition, it's even easier, from the arch wiki  (Arch Linux is another linux distribution) that helps troubleshoot, they say:

BIOS updates

BIOS update A09 was released on 2016-08-30. With A02 or newer, almost everything should work out of the box, and the kernel boot parameters that were used in conjunction with earlier BIOS versions are no longer necessary. Store the update binary on your EFI partition (/boot/EFI) or on a USB flash drive, reboot, and choose BIOS Update in the F12 boot menu.

I personally use arch linux on my XPS 13 and have found that forum extremely useful. As a matter of fact, I would also recommend Ubuntu users to check it out since arch shares many similar issues. I hope this helps, let us know if BIOS update works!
