New XPS 13 + Sputnik?

When can we expect the Sputnik version of the new XPS 13?

February 6th, 2015 19:00

Thanks for the reply Jared, Would you be able to tell me if all the XPS 13 9343 512gb models feature a PCIe SSD, as mentioned in this ars technica review:

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/01/hands-on-dell-xps-13-packs-a-13-inch-screen-into-an-11-inch-laptop/

also the blog post doesn't tell me whether there will be any significant hardware change between the normal and the sputnik version of the laptop.

dom!

I believe that link is broken :)

[EDIT]

I believe this is the link:

If i was to get the Windows version is there anyway i can be sure Dell is gonna release support for Linux, or will there be some kind of hardware change in the sputnik version?

[EDIT]
I understand the "vote with your wallet argument". I guess my questions is what kind of time frame would we have to wait, weeks, months, years!?

As for the touchpad issues in the XPS 13 9343, the problematic patch is on the Red Hat bug ticket.

I'm currently testing the RT288 patch from the Canonical bug report to fix the sound issues.  Fingers crossed!

Any idea if it will be available in Europe?

It would be great to have it, along with the non-touch versions (we can only buy the expensive models here :/ )

@Batley,

When the XPS 3 developer edition is released in North America, it will also be released in Europe.

thanks

Project Sputnik Team,

Will the Ubuntu version of the XPS 13 support configurations of 16gb? Most developers would like the extra 'buffer' for multiple tabs on documentation and running multiple VM's while developing. While the M3800 does support 16gb, IMO it isn't as appealing of an option as the possibility of a XPS 13 with 16gb of memory.

Thank you Project Sputnik for being awesome and supporting Linux

synkte,

thanks for your awesome support!

Unfortunately this go around we dont have a 16GB option for the XPS 13.  But if we get enough feedback we can submit to the product team for next time.

thanks

Thanks for the update Barton!

I hate to pester, but are there any updates? I'm in need of a new laptop, just attempting to gauge a timeframe - I (as I am sure many others) are eager to purchase one.

I hate to be negative, but this project is still months away, there are various Linux kernel issues are still waiting to be fixed (see this for an example: www.gossamer-threads.com/.../2110283).

When the fixes are done, testing/QA is required, then packaging, making sure the configuration is available on the website (this alone can take a few weeks - see the M3800 example), and then, just then the package can ship to the happy customer.

At this point I would say a summer release is likely (that is, if they fix the Linux issues soon), if not, well... you get the point.

You can buy the laptop today (if you are so lucky that Dell will sell you one - in the EU for example, it is not possible to buy the FHD version with the matte screen), and use Linux in a VM until the fixes are available. That is what I would do, anyway.

Will we get the option to customize the xps?

I really dont like the premade versions available on the win version.

It seems like we only have the qhd glossy screen option -.-, that´s a dealbreaker.

@Barton and/or Jared: Is it safe to purchase the Windows version now an load Linux later? In other words: will the DE feature specific changes to the hardware?

How about "When can we expect critical bug fixes and a ppa for the 2013 and 2014 version of the XPS-13?"

Still kinda waiting to have mine function at more than 75%, even out of the box.  :-(
