Update on XPS 13/15 2016 Developer Edition availability

Any news on the availability for any of the new XPS machines in a Developer Edition?

And do you know exactly what specifications will be used? I.e. 13? 15? Ram/screen/etc.?

Thanks, Phil.

Yeah I'll be tithing 999 of my dollars to Dell when they come out with the FHD/8GB/256GB/i5 option (which is what I assume the price will be, given the windows version is $1099 and the windows tax seems to be $100).

Hello,

I noticed on European dell website (FR), the XPS13 i5/8GoRAM/256Go is at 1500€ (with charges) in the "for work" section, and the exactly same XPS13 version in the "for home" section is at 1300€ => 200€ less.

Will the XPS13 DE i5/8GB/256Go be at around the same price as the "for home" section ~1300€ or will it be at the same price as the "for work" section ~1500€ ?

Thanks

The i7 configs are already available in the US and we will be adding an i5.

Europe, including DE, will launch before the i5 comes out in the States.  In Eur there will be 2 i7 configs and one i5 :-)

Translation: The US i5 will not come out until after the EU i7/i5 launch? Looks like I can stop refreshing the /sputnik page until I see people talking about EU availability.

Woah wait. If there is only 2 i7 versions coming out i would REALLY like to know which ones. There currently is a sale for some XPS Laptops on the German site and if "my" Laptop does not come out with Ubuntu i might consider getting one that is on sale right now.

If there will only be QHD versions with i7 i'm 100% sure many, many people will be disappointed, including me.

Edit: This is ***. I suspect you are not responsible for available configurations but all you do is annoy customers who waited so long for the Developer Editions and make them buy Windows 10 Laptops. Great job Dell.

Dear Barton,

As I estimate [1] that the FullHD non-touch version has > 10% more battery life (!),
especially as DEVELOPERS need *battery* and *independence*,
I also really have to urge for a FullHD i7 16GB Version.

Please. Pretty please.

And what about the recent post in this thread that on the Netherlands DELL website there was a windows version i7 16GB FullHD ?

I can't anything about the quality of the two different screens, but the QHD screen will use more power than a FHD screen because the QHD screen has more pixels that requires power.

I read a review about the Dell XPS 13 which stated that the FHD version had "typical battery life" of 11 hours while the QHD version had "typical battery life" of about 9.5 hours. So based on whatever battery test they ran the QHD version of the Dell XPS 13 reduced battery life by a bit over 14%.

Anyone know how much QHD affects battery life? Are we talking a few minutes or hours less than 1080p?

I talked to a rep when ordering the X1 yoga. He said WQHD should get 1 hour less battery life. I'm hoping for 8 hours on WQHD, i5 cpu.

I don't expect there to be special configurations for different markets, but I could be wrong. In the US, at least, i7 and QHD are joined at the hip. Yes, this is disappointing to me as well.

Yeah that is kind of strange. In Germany however there is a Windows 10 version with i7 and FHD. No Version with 16GB Ram and FHD though.

That only was a 8GB version (and that's not only on NL site, but also on Polish, German, … ones)

There is no XPS 13 with 16GB and FullHD/non-glare screen available at the moment (and probably also won't in near future, neither with Windows nor with Linux)

> I recently managed to get a Windows XPS 13 from the Dell outlet (i7-6560U, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram) and was looking forward to installing Linux on it myself. However I can't find any driver downloads on the Dell support sites for Linux, only windows drivers.

A comment regarding the 2015 drivers was that dell is not allowed to publicly distribute the drivers (I assume mostly because the firmware for the broadcom bluetooth and wireless driver, as that's really the only non-free stuff you need to get, the rest will work with recent enough linux distro).

The situation is even better with the 2016 model, as you only need firmware for bluetooth, but wireless is supported by open source driver/all needed drivers are upstream already, however you require a current kernel complete support. See archlinux wiki for reference:
