What are the new Ubuntu 22.04 ppas for my XPS 13?

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was released today.  Will there be support for upgrading laptops on 20.04 LTS?

Does this have any relevance: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-13-Plus-becomes-first-Ubuntu-22-04-LTS-certified-laptop.636188.0.html

I understand that refers to a newer model, so I'm not sure if it affects the 7390?

Just browsed/skimmed some seemingly new directories on Dell's OEM archive site, well, this is definitely not a meaningful or professional assertion, but it just appears to me that there's hardly anything on the horizon for my 9310 to upgrade. Most new packages seem to be developed for the new XPS 13 Plus. I do hope someone can correct me. I can't say this is unexpected to me; I don't expect desktop and laptop vendors to provide decent support for Linux, and quite frankly, I chose my 9310 totally because I thought, back in 2021 when the global logistics basically halted, I could get it much sooner than buying from other Linux-specific laptop vendors like Tuxedo, System76, etc.. Maybe it's time to just switch to Arch, given the user community is helpful and provides useful information.

Again, I hope someone can correct me and point me to the right apt source for OEM packages, before I'd gathered the spare time to switch to Arch.

Same here, honestly.  I actually returned a new Macbook Pro M1 and used the additional money left over to purchase additional Support for this laptop, including the extra battery protection .  Unfortunately, it seems this may prove to be a very bad move.  What's worst is that even the basic structure and working packages are not migrated (or just copied) to the new repo name, type, location. This should be the bare minimum and take very little effort.

Hello, I see you are looking for technical assistance. If you need our help, you can start a private message with us and we will be happy to assist you.

I have an older Dell XPS 13 which came with Ubuntu 18.

I have subsequently upgraded to Ubuntu 20, and today, to Ubuntu 22.

However, the internal speakers no longer make any sound although the pulseaudio panel reports sound output. (Sound works fine via bluetooth to my external speakers.) I also notice that Firefox isn't listed in the session (so doesn't get restored on login), unlike before. These are minor issues which I can workaround.

I would like to get any Dell XPS 13-specific drivers but don't know how to do this.

I saw the link above but it leads to scores of folders and I have no idea which one(s) I need or what to do.

What I'd like is for you to give me the /etc/apt/sources.list entries I need to access the appropriate deb packages though apt or synaptic.

I've seen some entries in a later post but beyond knowing I need 'jammy' versions I have no idea which one(s) I should be using.

Hello,

I have replied to the private message with the requested information.  As this was not an emergency issue, I had assumed it would be resolved in time without me needing to create a support request.  Unfortunately, though, it seems that this is taking much longer than anticipated; and there doesn't appear to be ongoing work around this issue, as evidenced by the lack of any status updates here or actual progress changes for the new repositories.  Additional information can be seen in the previous replies here by me and by the other community members, as the problem affects anyone who has chosen to upgrade to the latest LTS version of Ubuntu on an XPS 13 9310 laptop.

Thank you

I tried adding these lines to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/ jammy somerville
deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/ jammy somerville-tentacool
deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/ jammy somerville-marill
deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/ jammy somerville-hoppip

Then, in synaptic I searched for somerville and this gave a short list of packages. I tried installing them.

Everything seemed to work fine, but it made no noticable difference, so in the end I uninstalled them and removed the lines.

I think it would be really helpful if Dell or Canonical provided a definitive list of what  entries should be added to /etc/apt/sources.list for each kind of machine. (In my case a Dell XPS 13 9350).

I finally got around to upgrading my XPS 13 9300. Before the upgrade I had focal ppas:

1. oem.archve.canoncical.com/focal-oem/
2. dell.archive.canonical.com/focal-somerville/
3. dell.archive.canonical.com/focal-somerville-melisa/
4. ppa.launchpad.net/somerville-dla-team/ppa/ubuntu/focal/

And after the upgrade just two ppas:

1. dell.archive.canonical.com/jammy-somerville/
2. ppa.launchpad.net/somerville-dla-team/ppa/ubuntu/jammy/

As far as I can tell the Intel: Ice Lake-LP SMBus Controller is the most important driver that came from either focal-somerville or focal-somerville-melisa although it is unclear from which. Hopefully it is included in the jammy-somerville ppa as that is the only one of the two that successfully upgraded.

So far I have no bugs to report and everything seems to be running smoothly. Good luck all!

Thanks for the reply. Would be nice to have some official response from Dell, particularly for older models. I have the Dell XPS 73 7390. With Ubuntu 22.04 I experienced some weird issues, such as with random micro-freezes. I decided to come back to Ubuntu 18.04.

Yes it certainly would be.  Their support flippantly told me to stop bothering them with Linux support and sent me a link to the Red Hat web site for some reason.  This after they up-sold me their Basic Support service through 2023 when I bought my XPS.  It has been a frustrating experience.

I also bought my Dell specifically for its Linux support, so this is disappointing indeed.

Clearly, same for me. Will definitely be my last experience with Dell.

I use Linux professionally and non-professionally on "non-validated Linux hardware" for decades with not much problem, except some, usually temporary, little glitches but nothing really problematic. For the first time I decided to go for something validated and supported with Dell, and of course as well because of the look of the machine which is awesome.

I don't think I could have been more wrong.

Hi everyone,

I see a list of all the available repositories here:

http://dell.archive.canonical.com/dists/

Who knows what all these names mean?

and how to add them by name/url?

Filling in the gaps that Dell left behind...

Cheers !

I believe the names are the codenames for the different laptop models, e.g. my XPS13 7390 is three-eyed-raven. Sommerville seems to be a more generic project name.

I have these in my apt sources:

deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates focal-somerville-three-eyed-raven public
deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/ focal-dell public
deb-src http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/ focal-dell public
deb http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/ focal-somerville public
deb http://oem.archive.canonical.com/updates/ focal-oem public

My XPS13 7390 was originally delivered with Ubuntu 18.04, I did the update to 20.04 myself (updates were disabled), I checked the package repos and updated the URL's. To only issue I have with Ubuntu 20.04 is that my audio isn't working. (I rarely use it, so in case I do I use a bluetooth headphone)

I bought this XPS13 because it had factory Linux and I expected that Dell would support at least the Ubuntu LTS upgrade path. Based on my experience and what I read here it seems that it is "as is", only the version it is bought with is supported.
