need Ethernet adapter for XPS 13 - suggestions?

(Apologies if slightly offtopic, couldn't find more appropriate place to ask)

I really miss having a built-in Ethernet port on the XPS 13. Its wireless adapter has been flaky lately (in various distributions, so problem must be hardware-related, not software), reminding me how much I appreciate a wired Ethernet option, not only for when wireless doesn't work, but also for when you don't want to use wireless and prefer a cabled connection for security reasons. So, I'm looking for suggestions about an Ethernet adapter for USB 3 that works on the XPS 13 under Ubuntu.

Everything else working nicely under 14.04 LTS (which also runs beautifully on my ancient 2008 XPS 1330).

Hoping there's a good Ethernet adapter out there for the XPS 13,

drjs

I carry around one of these: http://plugable.com/products/usb3-e1000

There's also this one, which I think (not 100% sure) is the one that ships with the Precision M3800: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=443-BBBD

Thanks, the plugable looks good & less expensive, will give it a try. Much appreciated, cheers!

I have had good luck with Anker in the past, so I bought theirs: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabit-Ethernet-Network-Indicator-Warranty/dp/B00A0ABQLM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1402349689&sr=8-1&keywords=anker+usb+ethernet

It uses the same chipset as the pluggable, which requires a kernel module for 12.04, but is generally considered a good choice for linux. I've had no trouble with mine as long as it was plugged directly into my XPS 13, and it has typically worked on a USB 2.0 hub also.

I have an adapter with the ax88179_178a chipset. Unfortunaly it disconnects all the time. This happens in the log:

[ 3420.110617] ax88179_178a 3-2:1.0 eth1: ax88179_178a - Link status is: 0
[ 3422.288353] ax88179_178a 3-2:1.0 eth1: ax88179_178a - Link status is: 1

I am on ubuntu 14.04 and already updated the ax88179 driver.

Does someone have a advice or the same problem?

Hi again,

Does your Plugable Ethernet adapter work equally well in both USB ports of your Dell XPS 13?

I'm having trouble with the Ethernet adapter not working in the USB port on the left side (next to the power adapter port, near ESC key), although the Ethernet adapter does work perfectly (plug & play) on the right side USB port (next to battery indicator, near DELETE key). The Plugable support folks sent me a replacement unit which has the same problem. When I connect the adapter on the left side, it works intermittently and won't connect.

The left side USB port works perfectly with my other peripherals including external hard drives from which I can boot and run whole system, so I can't understand why this same USB port won't work with the Ethernet adapter.

Vendor wants me to mess with BIOS, but that doesn't make sense to me because the right side USB port works fine, and if BIOS were the problem, wouldn't both USB ports not work?

Maybe I have a defective USB port and need to work with Dell, but somehow I think the device is at fault. Anybody else have suggestions or experience with this adapter and the XPS 13's USB ports?

Thanks,

drjs

Hello DJRS

Don't worry, you are not alone! I have had exactly this problem with an ASIX AX88179 gigabit ethernet adaptor. It doesn't work in the left hand USB port (port11) of my XPS-13. Dell support have been very cooperative and replaced hardware in the XPS. That did not solve the problem so they have now supplied, free of charge, a Dell adaptor which I believe uses a Realtek chip. This is working fine. Clearly there is an incompatibility for Dell or ASIX (or both?) to sort out.

Otherwise I really like the XPS.

Well, this is interesting. I have a Dodocool USB 3 hub / ethernet adapter that doesn't work in Windows 8, it disconnects a lot... but I yet have to test it on the right USB port, as I was testing it on the left one.

the adapter for reference:

I confirm that a Dodocool USB 3 hub/ ethernet adapter works on the right USB port of a late-2013 Dell XPS 13.

Edit: after a while it seems to work only when the charger is plugged. Problem with the output current? I don't really know.

Hi,

I have a xps13-9333 with ubuntu 14.04 and I've purchased a dodocool usb3 hub / ethernet.

It keeps disconnecting / reconnecting constantly.

Did you finally solved it?

I haven't tried with Ubuntu. Does it disconnect/reconnect also if you use the usb port on the right?

Actually it doesn't work anymore on mine too but with windows, even on the right port it keeps disconnecting. It worked perfectly for a day, but now it's back to being tricky.

Sorry if you got your Dodocool because of my previous comment :(

Did not you notice that the USB right port is different from the left USB port? The right USB port is marked with an SS (super speed).

Both have been USB 3.0 ports for quite some time. I believe it happened either midway through the Ivy Bridge XPS 13 (L322X) or with the Haswell one (9333).
