Dimension 3100 Install Linux

Hi all,

I'm attempting to install Linux on my new Dimension 3100.
I've tried Kanotix, Mandriva 2005, and Ubuntu 5.10

None of these will get me anywhere near a set up screen.

The most legible thing I've had as from Kanotix which told me that it could not read the root fs.

Ubuntu gave me a load of messages like

uhci_hcd : System error, PCI Problems?

Anyone managed to successfully install a Linux distro?
Cheers

How far into the install of Mandriva and others do you get, you put the disk in, do you ever get to a GUI screen.  Do you currently have an OS installed and does everything work with it?  Also, you can always try Linux command line install and do a nopci when installing "Linux nopci".

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply.
I can't get anywhere near a graphical installer.

I boot from the CD, it asks me which boot option to try and I've tried

linux nopci

still no graphical installer.

It always stops before any graphics are displayed on screen.

the computer currently has Windows XP Media Center installed and it's running fine.

Any suggestions?

I've managed to get to the bit where it asks you for the language by disabling the USB, but problem is I can't use the keyboard.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Using Debian Sarge (3.1) I'm also unable to have a working USB keyboard.

Installation and use is OK using a PS/2 keyboard.

PS/2 keyboard? I don't see any PS/2 ports on the 3100. Are you using a PS/2 to USB adapter or what?

As far as the install problem, you can take a look at this post http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-88358.html

It doesn't offer any remedy, but the opening post describes this problem perfectly.

Any update to this problem would be greatly appreciated! TIA.

Hi, I had no problem installing fedora core 2 and fedora core 5 on my Dimension 3100. I did install it on an ide hard drive though, not the included sata hard drive.

I have the same problem. First I tried running the Ubuntu breezy Live CD but it hanged with the message:
uhci_hcd : System error, PCI Problems?

When I tried to install the same message appeared.

Did anyone manage to install Linux?
