Linux for Dell Mini 9

Hi,

I want to get a Mini 9 with Ubuntu - however in NZ they aren't selling the Mini 9 with anything but XP.

Does anyone know of where the install image for the Mini 9 version of Ubuntu might be available?

Same here in Singapore, please let us know when will Ubuntu Mini 9 be available. Or will it be available at all? I have shelved my purchase of other netbooks and waiting patiently for Mini 9 Ubuntu...

In the UK we are allowed Linux/Ubuntu installed, but the punishment is 8GB of disk space and 1.0Mp of camera resolution. £30 cheaper, but I don't think that fully compensates.

So is an Ubuntu download available (with the Dell mods so that all the Mini hardware works)?

If so I can buy the XP model and install Ubuntu myself.

richfeat,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

I only know of being able to order the mini with Ubuntu in the US. I have no information on when it will be offered in other countries. Trying to get more info.

Thanks Jesse. Note that the Mini is listed with Ubuntu on the UK Dell site (probably no deliveries yet though) but with an inferior and FIXED hardware spec compared to the XP model. If you want 16 Gb of SSD and a 1.3 Mp camera, you have to buy XP.

Not sure of the marketing strategy. There are many Gbs of software on the Ubuntu repositories - so why do Linux users need less SSD? Do we take less photos?

Buying a laptop with Linux pre-installed is great - the hardware should all work out of the box, but why is there always a "But ..."?

Can you, please, send a link to the iso file for installing ubuntu on mini 9? there is a version for other Dell models that cannot be used with mini 9.

I spoke to the sales rep through the web chat and was told the Inspiron Mini with Ubuntu will probably be available in Singapore around middle of this month. I am keeping my fingers crossed as he actually replied me "What is Ubuntu?" on my first question and I have to explain that to him... I will be really disappointed if Ubuntu version is not available in other countries-- I have been holding off purchase of UMPCs for my family and waited for the Dell as Ubuntu is my OS of choice. I will wait and see, if not, I might just picked up a competitor's product with Linux pre-loaded. Not going to boost the sales of Windows XP by getting the XP version and load Ubuntu myslef.

I live in Austria and Dell doesn't sell Notebooks with Ubuntu in this country. :smileysad:

But with the Mini 9 we have the possibility the first time. So I visited the homepage to see what I can buy for my money.

It's great that there is a vendor selling Desktops/Laptops with Ubuntu, but this offers are only second class :smileymad:

I am only able to buy the worse hardware (8GB SSD instead of 16GB and 0.3MP WebCam instead of 1.3MP).

Dell don't allow me to buy the better hardware-version (which comes preinstalled with XP)without XP and preinstalled with Ubuntu. But I don't want to support Microsoft with a XP license. The price for this version compared to the linux version is surprisingly cheap.

But why should I help Microsoft and claim Linux when I am a Linuxuser?? I don't want to color Microsofts statistics.

I think this was good work from Microsoft to prohibit Dell to sell Linux on the better hardware version. But this is a big fail. Dell, you lost a customer. I will wait for the HP Netbook.. Today I wrote they will release a Linux based Netbook..
