TB16 ubuntu support on XPS13

Hi there!

I just ordered an XPS13 ubuntu and I am interested in TB16 dock

When searching on the web, I see many issues with TB16 and linux supports. as well as linux thunderbolt support.

In the mean time, There are a few place on dell website where it's clearly stated that TB16 works on ubuntu... (ex here: http://iteraction.ee/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Dell-dock-TB16-spec-sheet.pdf )

I also found a dell document explaining some issue should be corrected in 2017...but then no information if it was solved or not:

http://www.dell.com/support/article/fr/fr/frbsdt1/sln305753/dell-dock-wd15-dell-thunderbolt-dock-tb16-support-for-ubuntu-1604-operating-system?lang=en

so, I dont know what to think about this dock ....

I don't think its officially supported. I checked the documentation and the drivers site and everything is windows centric. It looks like people have tried with various degrees of success.

The link I share (iteration...) clearly say:

Operating Systems:    Microsoft® Windows® 7, 8, 8.1, 10 Ubuntu 14.04 SP1 (PRTS), RedHat Enterprise Linux v7.2(PRTS)

This usually means that it's officially supported...but regarding dell and this dock, I'm not sure of the meaning :-), considering, like you said, various degrees of success...

Just received my TB16 (I bought  used one).
So far, out of the box:
- Display port  (full size) ok
- network ok
- keyboard & mouse on USB: ok
- charging! ok
- sound ok! (make sure in setting to select headset (front jack) or speaker (backside jack)

By the way, I'm on ubuntu 18.04

Does Dell provide an ISO to download Ubuntu 18.04? Mine came with Windows 10, but I really want to use Ubuntu 18.04.

I didn't see much with regards to drivers for 18.04, just 16.04.

Thanks!

hello!
i'm on xps15 and running ubuntu 18.04... Display port doesn't work at all sadly: no second monitor showed in display settings.
Would you have any trick to share? :)

thanks,

Same issue here sadly. The monitor shows up on display port but is black. I managed to get it working most of the time on hdmi but that even comes up blank some of the time, or flashes.

I had a third party usbc dock that I  replaced with the DB16 because I thought support wold be better.. seems not really sadly.

Linux support on this thing is spotty at best sadly. Should have stuck with the mac I think.

OK, I've dumped the stupid TB16. What an expensive mistake that was.

I'm now using an ATEN dock which was half the price, supports the high res monitor via display port and just works with Ubuntu 18.10. The TB16 is a boat anchor.

So much for using Dell gear with Dell computers.

Which model from Aten are you using?

It looks like Aten only makes one Thunderbolt dock.

My TB16 has been nothing but headaches every 3-4 months since I got it for work. Running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 2-4k monitors, 1-hdmi, 1-mouse, 1-keyboard, 1-camera.

My TB16 and XPS 13 worked fine for over a year. But, after updating the XPS's BIOS, just plugging in the TB causes the entire machine to lock up and become unresponsive. A hard reboot is the only way to get it back. I've had to move to the wall charger - and lost my external monitors - in the process.

I was in the same position. XPS January updates broke usage with TB16. Upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 18.10 and am able to use the dock for powering dual screen 4k monitors. It is still a little hit and miss though.

My Dell TB 16 makes insane high frequent noise which drives me crazy and keeps me from focussed working. Other than that - it kinda works (haven't updated firmware yet). Anybody got experience on how to update the firmware with XPS on Ubuntu? Or I'd also like to know about alternatives - without fan is a must :-(
