Ubuntu 8.04 + Dell S1909WX = ?

I've got a shiny new Dell S1909WX monitor and I love it. It's just, it's set to 1280 x 1024, and the user guide says its optimal resolution is 1440 x 960 and the difference *shows*. There's instructions in said user guide for setting it to the optimal, but the instructions are pretty clearly geared towards Windows boxes, and my computer's running Ubuntu 8.04. How do I get my widescreen monitor to act like it's a widescreen, not a fullscreen? The idiot-proof explanation, please, I don't actually know much about Ubuntu other than it's less annoying than Windows Vista.

Hi MercuryBlue,

I'm in the same situation... the 1440 x 900 16:10 is unusably unstable when I am using Jaunty 9.04, Linus OS, tho I do dual boot with XP (where the recommended resolution works fine). I couldn't find the resolution you said (1280 x 1024), but I did find 1280 x 800 (16:10), & this does seem to work the best (so far, & have not tried all options...), & I believe the 16:10 aspect ratio is the correct ratio for wide screen (? I'm no expert, I just connected to this kind of monitor about 1 hour ago).  I get the static lines flashing through the screen (not totally unusable, just subliminally irritating)... One of the things I think I will do is call Dell tech support, soon as I can, & see if they support Linux at all. Next is to see if this is a short coming on the part of Jaunty (also?).

So if any Dell/Linux savy person reads this, PLEASE do not consider this question a closed case, thanks.

Mercury Blue,You should be able to adjust your monitors resolution from within your system settings-preferences in Ubuntu.

@slikrick549: yeah, love to do that, but the options range from 640 x 480 to the aforementioned 1280 x 1024.
