Ubuntu M12 Password

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

A friend ask me to setup his Dell Mini 1210, I ask him about the user password that he used during the setup and he said that he did not enter one

When the computer is started the user is automatically started without requesting a password. When you try to do a software upgrade it requests a password and it will not take a blank or just “enter-key”

Any suggestions on how to get or set the password

Did you ever get an answer to this?  I have the same problem.  I didn't enter a password for my default user and now I can't do anything.  I can't upgrade, I can't create new users or enter user accounts.  It says my default user can "Administer the system" but I still can't do anything.  If I try to upgrade to Ubunto 9.04, it prompts me for a password.  Could it be asking for the root password?  Any idea what that could be?
