Direct attached mainframe storage versus FICON Director attach?

Yesterday I was sent an e-mail from a colleague who had just presented to some mainframe system engineers.  My colleague said that a question was asked about the possible trend of mainframe customers moving to direct attached versus director attached.  Thoughts?
