looking for best practices on hyper-V in service provider environment

Hi specialists,

one of my prospects is a local service provider that offers custom build virtual servers for hire to their business customers.

their current platform is based on Hyper-V VM's running on clustered dell servers over iSCSI to a Dell Equallogic shared storage box.

The equallogic is running out of performance & space, and they are looking into other and better vendors ;-)

I'm looking for 2 things :

* where to go to have a custom demonstration of the integration of our solutions with ms management tools? so not through video but remote webex or something like it?

* customer is looking to provide his end-customer with the possibility to take/ restore their own snapshots of their VM's. This has been positioned by our competition ofcourse, with their snapmanager for Hyper-V snap in, and we already discussed the negative sides of this solution. however, we would like to position something else, and I'm thinking direction Avamar for Hyper-V image level backup/restore, but this is only available next year. Any other solutions we can position to reach this goal? or are there better possibilities to reach the same goal?

thanks for your help.

I would recommend using the Microsoft Technology Center (MTCs) for the demo on Hyper-V and EMC integration.  Even if we can't bring the customer to the MTC we could arrange for a remote demo of our capabilities.

Regarding Hyper-V image level backup and restore, have you considered Networker?  Networker can take VSS based images of a Hyper-V parent and guest and integrates with Avamar.  More information can be found here: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-12044

As for your first question, I would check first with the Hopkinton Solutions Center and see if they have a demo already setup .  It would be a real demo running, they are typically run via webex and you would have a guide to walk you through your needs with the customer.  You might also try the demo cloud.  Second, I would check with Adrian Simays's team and see if they have an environment that might be useful to you.  Then yo umight reach out to the Microsoft Consulting group.  There is an outside chance they might have an environment you could use...

As for the second question, I think Avamar is a great solution for this, but you are correct in it is a little bit out currently.  I wish I could give you more direction here...

Great ideas.  The MTC in concert with Replication manager should be a great solution for a demo.  Just make sure to give them enough time to get the demo setup and going.  Also, make sure you do a dry run of the demo prior to giving the demo to the customer.

I found this white paper that might help you. This white paper offers an in-depth look at how EMC Replication Manager interoperates with certain best in-class-virtualization solutions, namely VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Please let me know if this was of any help

I checked with the Hopkinton Solutions Center and the only Hyper-V demo they have is on VPLEX. Who would have thought? The HSC offerings can be found at this link: http://demosolutions.isus.emc.com/.
