2208WFP, XPS 15-9560, No VGA cable message

Hi. So I was given an older monitor (REV A01), but I have a newer computer (XPS 15 from last year). The monitor has DVI-D and VGA inputs, and I picked up a VGA to HDMI cable to connect it to my laptop. However, when I plug everything in and turn everything on, the monitor screen says "No VGA Cable." Anyway to fix this?

REV A01 is just a revision number, not a Dell monitor model number. Look on the monitor rear label for the 20 digit S/N. Using that, I can identify the Dell monitor model. Which specific XPS 15 model? Link to the cable you bought.

Their site states,
"Please note that it doesn't work with laptops to LCD monitor directly and that you will need an adapter box to convert the VGA signals to HDMI in the first place. Only our cable is not enough."

They are saying it is one direction only, HDMI to VGA, then they say, "you will need an adapter box to convert the VGA signals to HDMI in the first place". They are very confusing.

This is how I would set it all up =

XPS 15-9560 HDMI out port --> HDMI to VGA cable --> 2208WFP VGA in port
